WASH Policy and Planning  - WASH Institute

WASH Policy and Planning

We support national and state governments in strengthening WASH governance and implementing WASH missions by supporting the development and execution of inclusive, evidence-based, and climate-resilient policies.

We aim to continue supporting urban and rural ministries by being the go-to technical assistance partner for majority of the state governments in India.

The Problem

Despite spending over Rs 5 lakh crores (USD 60 billion) since 2019 to improve water supply and sanitation in India, several systemic challenges hampers implementation.

National and state governments face staff shortages and a lack of skilled WASH professionals, which limits their ability to plan, execute, and monitor national WASH missions efficiently.

Inadequate staffing also restricts the government's ability to engage with key stakeholders and build inclusive, evidence-based, and climate-resilient WASH policies.

Our Approach

We help cities adopt data driven approach to understand the risks, identify gaps, engage communities, and take action for clean toilets, safe wastewater management, and reuse of treated wastewater.

Support Urban and Rural Ministries

With support from donors, WASH Institute deploys specially trained technical staff (our front-end team) to provide hands-on assistance to national and state governments in implementing WASH missions across urban and rural areas.

Implement Proven Operational Model - Front-End Team Backed by Technical Experts

Our front-end team is supported by a highly qualified back-end team that serves as a knowledge hub for all programs within the organization. This integrated model ensures that our front end team is equipped with the latest technical insights and best practices to inform policy development and provide real-time, context-specific support to the government.

Informs Policy through Implementation Knowledge

WASH Institute goes beyond technical assistance. We actively implement WASH interventions in selected villages and towns as part of our support to national and state government. Insights and learnings from these field experiences are systematically documented and used to shape evidence-based, practical, and scalable policy recommendations.

Our Impact

Our programs impact change at an ecosystem level - from grassroots to policy making.
